Registration Process — Step by Step
IPMAT registration is entirely online through the IIM portal. Here is a complete step-by-step guide to ensure you do not face any issues:
Step 1: Create Your IIM Account
Visit ipmat.nta.nic.in and click on "New Registration." You will need a valid email ID and mobile number. IIM sends an OTP for verification. Use a personal email and phone that you will have access to throughout the admission process (avoid school emails).
Step 2: Fill the Application Form
- Personal Details: Name (exactly as on Class 10 marksheet), date of birth, category, PwD status, address
- Academic Details: Class 12 board, year of passing or expected year, school details, qualifying marks
- IPMAT Paper Selection: Choose your language(s), quantitative abilitys, and whether you want the Data Interpretation. This is the most critical step — double-check IIM requirements before selecting.
- Exam Centre Preferences: Choose 4 preferred cities. IIM assigns the nearest available centre. Avoid choosing only one city.
- Medium of Exam: Select your preferred language for the question paper.
Step 3: Upload Documents
- Recent passport-size photograph (10-200 KB, JPEG/JPG)
- Scanned signature (4-30 KB, JPEG/JPG)
- Category certificate (if applicable)
- PwD certificate (if applicable)
Step 4: Pay the Application Fee
| Category | Fee (Expected) |
|---|---|
| General / OBC | Rs. 750 – 900 |
| SC / ST / PwD | Rs. 350 – 450 |
| Third Gender | Rs. 350 – 450 |
| Outside India | Rs. 3,500 – 4,000 |
Payment can be made via debit card, credit card, net banking, or UPI. Save the payment confirmation receipt.
Step 5: Download Confirmation
After successful payment, download and print the confirmation page. This is your proof of registration. The admit card will be released separately, closer to the exam date.
Admit Card Details
The IPMAT admit card is released 1-2 weeks before the exam date on ipmat.nta.nic.in. Here is what you need to know:
- Download and print the admit card on A4 paper. Colour printout is not mandatory but recommended.
- Verify all details: Name, photograph, exam centre, date, shift, paper codes. If any detail is incorrect, contact IIM immediately through the correction window or helpline.
- Carry to exam centre: The admit card is mandatory. Without it, you will not be allowed entry. Carry the printout along with a valid photo ID (Aadhaar, passport, or school ID).
- Check exam centre location: Visit the centre a day before if possible. IPMAT is held across hundreds of centres, and finding yours on exam day can be stressful.
- Note the shift timing: IPMAT runs in two shifts (morning and afternoon). Your admit card specifies which shift(s) you are in. Different papers may be in different shifts on different days.
Exam Day Schedule & Shifts
IPMAT is conducted over multiple days and shifts to accommodate the large number of candidates and papers. Here is the typical daily structure:
| Shift | Reporting Time | Gate Closing | Exam Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shift 1 (Morning) | 7:30 AM | 8:15 AM | 9:00 AM – 12:15 PM* |
| Shift 2 (Afternoon) | 1:30 PM | 2:15 PM | 3:00 PM – 6:15 PM* |
*Duration varies based on number of papers in that slot. Each paper is 45-60 minutes.

- PwD certificate (if applicable)
- Transparent water bottle, simple analog watch
What NOT to Bring

Result Declaration & Counselling
Result
IIM declares IPMAT results in the form of percentile scores (not raw marks). Since IPMAT uses normalization across multiple shifts, your percentile indicates your relative standing among all test-takers in that subject. Results are available on ipmat.nta.nic.in.
Counselling Process
After results, each IIM conducts its own counselling/admission process:
- IIM Indore: Uses CSAS (Common Seat Allocation System). You register on the DU portal, fill college and programme preferences, and are allotted seats based on IPMAT percentile and preference order. Multiple rounds of allocation.
- JNU: Separate online counselling through the JNU admission portal. IPMAT score is the primary criterion.
- BHU: BHU has its own counselling portal. Seat allocation based on IPMAT scores + programme-specific criteria.
- Other Universities: Each Central/State IIM that accepts IPMAT has its own counselling process. Check individual IIM websites from June onwards.
Pro Tip: Do not wait for results to start the counselling registration process. Many universities open their admission portals before IPMAT results. Register in advance so you are ready to fill preferences as soon as results are declared.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. When will IPMAT 2027 registration start?
Based on previous years, IPMAT 2027 registration is expected to open in late February 2027 on ipmat.nta.nic.in. The registration window is typically 4-5 weeks long.
Q2. Can I change my subject selection after registration?
Yes, but only during the Correction Window (typically 3-5 days after the registration deadline). After the correction window closes, changes are not possible. Choose carefully during initial registration.
Q3. What if my IPMAT exam clashes with board exams?
IIM schedules IPMAT after most board exams conclude (usually May-June). CBSE and most state boards end by April. Historically, IPMAT has not clashed with major board exams.
Q4. How many days will the IPMAT exam be conducted over?
IPMAT is typically conducted over 10-15 days in multiple phases. Your specific papers may be on different days. You will only attend on the day(s) your subjects are scheduled.
Q5. Is there a second attempt for IPMAT?
No. IPMAT is conducted once per year. There is no re-exam or second attempt option. If you miss it or are unsatisfied with your score, you need to wait for IPMAT 2028.
Q6. When should I start preparing if the exam is in May 2027?
Start now. If you are reading this in early 2026, you have over a year — an ideal preparation window. Even starting in August-September 2026 gives you 8-9 months, which is sufficient. Our Lakshya 2027 course is designed for students starting 10-12 months before the exam.
